Ito is a large community in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. The community is largely populated by farmers. The community shares boundary with Atan Onoyom and Arochukwu Community of Abia State. Ito people are peace loving and hardworking.
Few years ago, the people of Ito community were filled with joy when their hopes of having access to affordable health was blessed with a health post. The health post served its purpose, but not for long, as gradually this beautiful bride faced several decays. The roof was gone, there was no toilet, the painting on the walls were washed off, the window louvers were all broken, window nets were all torn. The health post was rated the worst in Odukpani Local Government Area.
Few months ago, an action plan was put in place by the Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade, through the Director General of Cross River Primary Health Development Agency, Dr. Betta Edu to identify and fix Primary Health Centers across the State that are in terrible condition. The programme was tagged "72 HRS PHC Challenge". This programme affords Cross Riverians the opportunity of showing government the state of health centres in their various communities/villages and see them fixed withing 72 hours.
Ito community was not left out of this commendable intervention, as the health center was pictured through this challenge and was fixed within 72 hours. This was made possible by Government and the people of Ito community, as the people provided labour for the rehabilitation works, while Government provided materials for the job. At some point, the Director General of Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Betta Edu and some staff of the agency were seen assisting the locals with painting and tiling.
Today, the Health Centre has been completed fixed and fully operational with beds, toilet, repainted walls, tiled and with beautiful modern windows.
Ito people expressed delight and appreciated Government for this uncommon blessing. Speaking through the clan head of the community, the people thanked government for restoring smiles on their faces.
